Are There Any Supplements That Can Boost Your Oral Health?

October 10, 2018Cassell DentistryDental Health

Just like any other part of your body, your mouth needs minerals and vitamins to stay healthy. What you eat and drink has a significant impact on your oral health and if you are not as conscious about having a diet rich in fruits and vegetables you could be harming your teeth and gums.

Calcium

Teeth are the strongest bones in the human body and need calcium to stay healthy. Eating a balanced diet rich in calcium can go a long way to keep your teeth strong and healthy. Taking a calcium supplement is beneficial for your oral health because it helps to maintain tooth structure.

Phosphorus

Phosphorus interacts with calcium to maintain a healthy mouth. This vital mineral is responsible for preserving tooth structure and helping calcium remineralize the enamel in your teeth. Without phosphorus, teeth become weak and can crack or chip.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is considered a super vitamin that is essential for the protection of the immune system. Scientific research concludes vitamin D is one of the most complete nutrients in nature and some think of it as a hormone.

Protein

A diet rich in protein helps your oral health by improving the immune system and encouraging the development of connective tissue. Protein is also responsible for maintaining tooth structure.

Folate

Low levels of folate are associated with an increased risk for periodontal disease. This condition could lead to tooth loss if not treated promptly.
While taking daily supplements such as calcium and vitamin D can help your oral health, in many cases, eating the foods that provide those nutrients is the best thing you can do for your mouth. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, as well as foods rich in calcium and getting enough vitamin D will be the best way to maintain your oral health.
