FAQs About Dentures

FAQs About Dentures

April 1, 2021Cassell DentistryDental Health

Are you planning to replace your dentures or get them for the first time? Although the benefits of dentures have been around for decades, their designs have changed over the years. Many of the FAQs about dentures that we hear in our San Diego practice pertain to the cosmetic, comfort, and functional aspect of these common tooth replacement treatments.

Before you settle on the best tooth replacement treatment, read through these FAQs about dentures:

How many types of dentures are there?

Generally speaking, there are 3-4 standard denture designs. The first is a full denture or “plate”, which covers your entire arch and replaces all of the teeth at once. The second is a partial denture, which only replaces the missing teeth and snaps around the teeth you still have. And then there are overdentures, which are like traditional dentures that snap onto dental implants for added stability. One last alternative is a sort of denture hybrid, which is more streamlined and permanently anchored onto anywhere from 4-6 dental implants.

Can I choose the way my new teeth look?

Some people prefer more affordable dentures near me while others want more aesthetic designs. Depending on your preferences, we can dictate the size, shape, and color of the teeth on your denture for the best overall results.

Can I get dental implants to support my denture?

Absolutely. If you qualify for dental implants, you may want to consider an overdenture or implant retained denture. The benefits of dentures on top of implants include added stability throughout the day and no rocking or rubbing when you eat and speak.

Will I need to have any teeth extracted?

One of the benefits of dentures is that partial designs can be fitted around the healthy teeth you’re still able to retain. But if those teeth are diseased and non-restorable, we recommend extracting them first. Full dentures cover your entire arch, so it’s not possible to fit one if there are still any teeth in the way.

How long does it take to adjust to a new denture?

We recommend giving yourself a few days to adjust to eating and speaking with your new denture. If you’ve worn dentures in the past, the adjustment phase will usually go by a bit more quickly. First-time denture-wearers may need up to a week or two.

How long do dentures last?

A typical denture will last for several years as long as it’s cared for properly. Occasionally Dr. Cassell may need to adjust or reline your denture to ensure a snug, comfortable fit against your gum tissues. Since the shape of our mouths can change over time, these adjustments are quite typical.

How much do dentures cost?

The price of dentures depends on the type you’re getting, the material choices you select, and if any dental implants are involved. For affordable dentures (near me) we will work up a detailed care plan that outlines all of the fees involved so that you’re never caught off guard by the price of dentures or other services. And yes, we take dental insurance!

Can I sleep in my dentures?

Removable dentures should never be worn to bed at night. Always remove them when sleeping, as excessive nighttime wear can predispose you to oral infections and bone damage. We recommend soaking your prosthesis in a denture cleanser overnight, then brushing it clean the next morning.

Do I still need to schedule dental checkups if I’m wearing a denture?

Yes, you do. Dr. Cassell will want to check the fit of your dentures and examine your soft tissues and bone support. We’ll also perform an oral cancer screening.
